Another first for EMCÉ

Proudly displayed on the EMCÉ stand on the Offshore Energy 2017 in Amsterdam is the first ever cable reel produced in compliance with the new DNVGL –ST-E272 regulations. Previous cable reels conformed to DNVGL –ST-E271, which only regulated the container frame in which the actual reel was integrated.
Following market demands it was decided to bring the new reel not only under ST-E271 for the container frame, but also under ST-E272 for the reel itself. DNVGL –ST-E272 is drawn up to bring all removable deck equipment under one regulation regarding machine safety regarding all possible aspects. Not only operator safety is considered, but also the effect the environment has on the equipment (e.g. ATEX, water tightness or similar demands) and the effect the equipment may have on the surrounding deck space, other equipment or critical processes (e.g. oil leakage, fumes or EMC and electrical supply issues).
Since ST-E272 was drawn up to cover a wide range of equipment, getting things right the first time for a reel also proved challenging for DNVGL itself, but in close cooperation between DNVGL, the customer and the EMCÉ engineering and compliance departments the equipment was produced to be fully compliant.

The reel is produced for IHC IQIP, which uses the reel to handle the electrical control cables for their subsea pile driving equipment. The relationship with IHC IQIP already spans a period of well over 15 years, during which period different types of reel were produced. The reels ranged from relatively small cable reels to very large hose reels.
Over the years the regulations regarding the reels have gradually increased from being virtually non-existent tot the current DNVGL –ST-E271/ DNVGL –ST-E272 level. The professional interaction between IHC IQIP and EMCÉ over the years made it possible for both companies to remain at the leading edge of this market segment with operational and safety benefits for all who work with the equipment.
